When to Book Your Wedding Photographer

When to Book Your Wedding Photographer

Booking your wedding photographer is one of the most crucial decisions you'll make during the wedding planning process. The right photographer will capture the essence of your special day, preserving memories that will last a lifetime. But when is the best time to secure your wedding photographer? In this article, we'll explore the ideal timeline for booking your wedding photographer to ensure you find the perfect match for your big day.

Start Early

Ideally, you should begin researching and contacting wedding photographers as soon as you have your wedding date and venue secured. Popular wedding photographers often book up months, or even years, in advance, especially during peak wedding season. Starting your search early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred photographer and ensures you have plenty of time to find the perfect fit. They’ll also be best suited (with the exception of planners and coordinators) to give you advice on what to look for next, and to bounce ideas off - that’s one of the reasons why I like to have video chats with my couples when they’re considering me, so they can bounce ideas off me and see my genuine excitement for weddings!

Consider Your Wedding Date

The time of year and day of the week you're getting married can have a significant impact on photographer availability. Saturdays during the peak wedding season (typically spring and summer) tend to fill up quickly, so if you're planning a weekend wedding during this time, it's essential to book your photographer well in advance. If you're flexible with your wedding date, you may have more options and potentially better pricing by choosing a weekday or off-peak season date.

Do Your Research

Take the time to research and review potential wedding photographers thoroughly. Look at their portfolios, read reviews from past clients, and ask for recommendations from friends, family, or wedding planners. Narrow down your options to a shortlist of photographers whose style and aesthetic align with your vision for your wedding day. A good starting point is either Google, or Instagram, look up photographers in your area, or photographers that have shot at your venue before by looking through tags.

Schedule Consultations

Once you've compiled a shortlist of potential photographers, schedule consultations to meet with them in person or virtually. Use this time to discuss your wedding vision, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of their personality and working style. It's essential to choose a photographer who not only has the technical skills but also makes you feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera.

Find the photographer that gets your vibe!

Book Early, But Not Too Early

Once you've found the perfect photographer, don't wait too long to secure their services. Wedding photographers often require a deposit to reserve your date, so be prepared to make a commitment when you find the right fit. Ticking off a photographer (and perhaps a videographer) from your wedding to-do list can be quite relieving. I’ve had some couples book me 4-5 months in advance, and some 18-20 months in advance - it all depends on how organised you want to be and how much you want one particular photographer to capture your day.

Finalise Details Closer to the Wedding

While it's essential to book your photographer early, you'll have plenty of time to finalise the details closer to your wedding date. This includes discussing your shot list, creating a timeline for the day, and scheduling engagement or pre-wedding photo sessions. Regular communication with your photographer leading up to the wedding ensures that everyone is on the same page and helps to alleviate any last-minute stress.

In conclusion, booking your wedding photographer is a significant milestone in the wedding planning process. By starting your search early, doing thorough research, and booking at the right time, you can secure the perfect photographer to capture the magic of your special day. Remember to trust your instincts, communicate openly with your photographer, and enjoy the journey of planning your dream wedding.
